Who We Are

Kenyir For Life is a legacy of previous conservation efforts by Rimba to protect the Kenyir watershed in the state of Terengganu, continuing the work started under the Kenyir Wildlife Corridor project, and later Project Black Cloud and the Harimau Selamanya project.

As a continuation of formative efforts by state government and Rimba, Kenyir For Life fosters a spirit of collaboration and seeks to work with like-minded stakeholders across different sectors towards the common goal of forest protection as it can only be achieved through collective efforts. The organisations below are some of our current and past collaborators:

Terengganu State Parks Management Council

ACTIVE

Bio

Terengganu State Parks Management Council or Majlis Pengurusan Taman-taman Negeri Terengganu is created under Section 8 of the Terengganu State Parks Enactment 2017 to manage and govern areas gazetted as state park such as Setiu Wetlands State Park, Kenyir State Park, Pulau Tenggol and Pulau Nyirih. TSPMC works with various organisations to effectively manage its parks and raise awareness about the importance of preserving mother nature among the Terengganu public through its efforts.

Nature Based Solutions

ACTIVE

Bio

Nature Based Solutions is a Malaysian start-up formed in 2020 to develop and promote sustainable financing for the protection of Peninsular-Malaysia forests. NBS aims to channel investments from the private sector into the 200,000-ha Kenyir watershed to create conservation outcomes and help companies meet their ESG / Sustainability commitments. Their vision is to scale up the level of financial flows from the public, private, and not-for-profit sectors to support actions that protect, manage, and restore natural ecosystems in Malaysia.

Panthera

ACTIVE

Bio

Panthera is the only organisation in the world that is devoted exclusively to the conservation of the world's 40 wild cat species and their ecosystems. As apex predators such as the Malayan Tiger are vital to the well-being of the forests and other animals, Panthera uses their skills and experience to track down illegal poachers that endanger our beloved national icon as well as other big cats of Malaysia and their survival within the Kenyir State Park area.

Gaia

ACTIVE

Bio

Gaia is a social enterprise dedicated to conserving the 9 species of hornbills that are found in  the Kenyir State Park. Gaia achieves its objectives by working with other NGOs and local communities to document the conservation status of these iconic species and enhancing breeding opportunities. These majestic creatures are important to the survival of many species of flora within the area and throughout the region as they are known to be farmers of the sky as their role is dispersing the seeds of numerous fruit trees and helping the Kenyir forest renew itself.

Justice for Wildlife Malaysia

ACTIVE

Bio

Justice for Wildlife Malaysia serves as the legal representatives for the voiceless floras and faunas through legal means such as the promotion of legal literacy among wildlife conservation fraternities and engaging wildlife prosecutors to further investigation methods and improve prosecutorial paperwork. There is a huge gap in the Malaysian legislative system that makes it hard to punish those who are solely responsible for the lives of Kenyir State Park’s animals, plants and their well being.

Rimba

PAST

Bio

The now-defunct Rimba is a non-profit group of scientists who conduct conservation research to produce evidence-based management recommendations to help decision-makers mitigate threats to biodiversity in Peninsular Malaysia.

Rimba’s aim was to function as the bridge linking conservation science and conservation practice — taking extra steps to proactively bring their results to practitioners and policymakers, in order to ensure that the research feeds directly into practice, informing and guiding conservation action on the ground.

Rimba played an active role in shaping up conservation efforts in Kenyir watershed between 2010-2020 and eventually incubated NBS, JWM and Project Takop to continue the work.

Protecting the gazetted area from illegal activities has also been made possible with support from the Terengganu State Forestry Department, Department of Wildlife and National Parks of Peninsular Malaysia (PERHILITAN), The Royal Malaysian Army and The Royal Malaysia Police.

With our collaborative approach, KFL is always hopeful for prospects of working together with like-minded organisations and communities in keeping the forest and biodiversity of Kenyir for future generations.
